What is Peripheral Neuropathy?

Peripheral neuropathy is a condition that affects the nerves outside of your brain and spinal cord. These nerves help you feel things like balance, touch, temperature, and pain, they also control your muscles' movements.

What are the symptoms of peripheral neuropathy?

  1. Tingling and Numbness: Many people with peripheral neuropathy experience sensations of tingling, pins and needles, or numbness in the affected areas, often starting in the toes and fingers.

  2. Burning or Shooting Pain: Sharp, shooting pains or a constant burning sensation can occur, often in the hands or feet.

  3. Sensitivity to Touch: Even light touches or pressure can cause discomfort or pain in some cases.

  4. Muscle Weakness: Weakness in the muscles can lead to difficulty with activities that require strength or coordination.

  5. Loss of Coordination: Lack of coordination and balance problems can make it challenging to walk or perform fine motor tasks.

  6. Difficulty Sensing Temperature: Problems with detecting hot or cold temperatures can increase the risk of burns or frostbite.

  7. Foot Problems: Peripheral neuropathy can lead to foot problems like ulcers, infections, and deformities due to decreased sensation and poor blood circulation.

  8. Gastrointestinal Symptoms: Digestive issues like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation can arise due to nerve damage affecting the digestive system.

  9. Sexual Dysfunction: Neuropathy can also impact sexual function, causing problems with arousal, sensation, and sexual performance.

It's important to remember that there can be additional symptoms and not everyone with peripheral neuropathy will experience all of these symptoms, and the severity can vary widely.

Can peripheral nerves heal?
YES!

It is well established in the scientific literature that peripheral nerves can and do heal. The key issue is that not only do we need to get the nerves healing, but we have to stop whatever is causing the nerve damage in the first place. When the underlying cause of the neuropathy is discovered and proper support for the nerves is provided, it optimizes the ability for the nerves to heal!

In order to effectively heal nerve damage, three factors must be determined:

  • What is the underlying cause of the nerve damage?

  • How severe is the nerve damage?

  • What types of nerve fibers are damaged?

How much treatment will the nerves require to heal?

This will be dependent on the degree of nerve damage and what types of fibers are damaged.

The treatment we provide has four main goals…

  1. Optimize the environment within the body for nerve healing.

  2. Increase blood flow to the nerves.

  3. Stimulate the nerves that are damaged to reduce pain and improve balance.

  4. Decrease brain-based pain.

No surgery. No addictive medications.
